Image Handling, Processing and Analysis

Information concerned with the specifics of handling image files is at Operating The Confocal Microscope.
Below is brief information about programs that may be used to view, process and analyse
image data. BMFunctions, LViewPro, VidEdit, ThumbsPlus, Tiffsplit, WangImage and
WinZip may also be found here:- imaging

- Image Handling - quick viewing - file format conversion -
very simple editing
- display
- WangImage: One of only a few PC programs that will view all channels of
TIF multichannel image format (use "view thumbnails and Image"). Does not
display embedded parameters such as zoom & calibration stored when "file ->
save as" is used to save a scanned image. [WangImage is included with
WindowsNT, Windows95 free, we have it! Try "Start
-> Programs -> Accessories -> Imaging"]
- Imaging for Windows. Same as WangImage, which was purchased by
Kodak. [included with Windows98 & 2000. Try "Start -> Programs
-> Accessories
-> Imaging"]
- ThumbsPlus 4.1,ThumbsPlus 4.02: Nice gallery viewer. Can view all
channels of TIF image file and view and edit text comments embedded in TIF files.
Version 4 will also make thumbnail catalogues of multiple CD-Roms [shareware Cerious Software, Inc. $65, we have a 5 user
license, UNC Neuroscience Center Confocal Microscope users see m.c. for installation
CD]
- LViewPro: simple but versatile
viewer. Good bulk file format converter, but can only display 1st image
of
multipage TIFF
format file. [shareware, we have it!]
- Photoshop: great for image manipulation [Adobe corporation ~$300, version 5 is
installed on the Leica_tcs computer]
- conversion
- tiffsplit.exe - converts multipage tiff file (.tif)
to single page tiff files (.tif).
This version is obsolete and has been replaced by tiffsplit4.exe [ command prompt
program for win95,98,NT Dos Box, Use your
UNC Neuroscience confocal
account name and password to obtain here ]
- tiffsplit4.exe
- Enhanced version of tiffsplit.exe.
Makes extended focus images with RGB overlays. Outputs split files as bitmaps by default -

- pic2bmp.exe & bmp2pic.exe - converts between Biorad pic format file (.pic) into bitmap (.bmp). OK not
really relevant but someone might just have an obscure need for it.
Confocal Assistant 4.01 is an
excellent movie viewer for PIC format images [ command prompt
program for win95, 98, NT Dos Box, $costly obtain from
Michael Chua ]
- LViewPro, good for tiff (.tif) to bitmap (.bmp) etc., but does not handle multipage tiff
files created on the LeicaTCS [shareware ~$40, available
on Leica_tcs & PIF computers ]
- Image Processing - resizing - brightness/contrast/gamma
correction - noise reduction - etc.

- Intensity (2-D, 3-D, z-series, time-series)
- Bulk file handling - sets of images in a directory may be process with a
small suite of BMFunction
command line programs. Tiffsplit.exe & tiffsplit3.exe can operate on
groups of TIFF files
- Image Analysis:
- NIH Image is for MAC
computers. A PC version is available from Scion
- 3D rendering and projection
- Slicer [Fortner ~$600, we have it!
- T3D - Neosys [IDL ~$300, available
on the ORAC computer ]
- VoxBlast [Vaytek ~$3500, available]
- LeicaTCS-NT [we have it!]
- Movie Production
- FTP File transfer programs
- ws_ftp
- PC directory based ftp transfer program -[free for UNC users]
- ftp_voyager - another PC based directory based ftp
transfer program [~$40]
- Netscape Navigator! Just type in to "goto"
